Between Castelo de Vide and Portalegre, a few kilometers from Spain, we find the peaceful village of Marvão, at the highest point of the Serra de São Mamede.
Monte de Ammaia, as it was known, owes its current name to the fact that it served as a refuge for Ibn Marúan, a Moorish warrior, during the 16th century. IX. The Arab rule, which lasted some centuries, ended when the military campaign of 1160/66 of the Christian Reconquest here had another victory, under the action of D. Afonso Henriques, the first king of Portugal.
Within the walls, there is a beautiful set of popular Alentejo architecture. In the narrow streets of Marvão, you can easily discover Gothic arches, Manueline windows, wrought iron balconies embellishing the houses and other interesting details in corners marked by the local granite.
Entre Castelo de Vide e Portalegre, a poucos quilómetros de Espanha, encontramos a tranquila vila de Marvão, no ponto mais alto da Serra de São Mamede.
O Monte de Ammaia, como era conhecido, deve o seu atual topónimo ao facto de ter servido de refúgio a Ibn Marúan, um guerreiro mouro, durante o séc. IX. O domínio árabe, que durou alguns séculos, terminou quando a campanha militar de 1160/66 da Reconquista Cristã aqui teve mais uma vitória, sob a ação de D. Afonso Henriques, primeiro rei de Portugal.
Dentro das muralhas, revela-se um bonito conjunto de arquitetura popular alentejana. Nas estreitas ruas de Marvão, descobrem-se facilmente arcos góticos, janelas manuelinas, varandas de ferro forjado embelezando as casas e outros detalhes de interesse em recantos marcados pelo granito local.
