"Oldest Big Three General Hospital"

Hello, everyone!

Until the 1990s, Seoul National University Hospital (SNUH) was the number one hospital in Korea. However, as Hyundai and Samsung entered the hospital business, they began to outperform Seoul National University Hospital in size and sales, and competition among the three big hospitals in Korea is still ongoing.
What's interesting is that not only SNUH but also the heads of Hyundai Asan Medical Center (AMC) and Samsung Medical Center (SMC) all graduated from Seoul National University Medical School.

SNUH, which developed the world's first artificial heart and succeeded in the birth of a test tube baby for the first time in Korea, has many patients today. Even though about 2,000 doctors are treating 10,000 outpatients a day, they have to wait more than a month for the appointment. They have to wait another month for hospitalization.

Nevertheless, the hospital is always crowded because the desperate patients gather here. No one comes to SNUH waiting for a month to cure a cold or indigestion. There are many patients with rare and incurable diseases who are difficult to treat in other hospitals.

Although it lagged behind hospitals in large companies by figures, SNUH is still the best hospital in the minds of Koreans. Let's go inside SNUH, where the new building has been completed in 2019, which makes it much more pleasant and has many auxiliary facilities such as restaurants and cafes.

Newsweek has ranked Asan Medical Center’s (AMC) oncology, cardiology, and endocrinology department as best among Korean hospitals.

The report was part of the U.S. weekly news magazine’s ranking of global hospitals in the field of oncology, cardiology, and endocrinology. The article ranked the first to 50th hospitals by name and provided the 51st to 200 ranks in alphabetical order, without giving a specific ranking.

Newsweek rated each hospital through an online survey conducted by Statista, a German global market research and consumer data agency, on tens of thousands of medical professionals, including doctors and hospital managers.

AMC ranked seventh in oncology, 36th in cardiology and fourth in endocrinology. It was the only Korean hospital to enter the top 50 list in all three fields.

Some other Korean hospitals showed a strong presence in the report.

Samsung Medical Center (SMC) ranked ninth in oncology and 17th in endocrinology. Seoul National University Hospital (SNUH) ranked 12th in oncology and 11th in endocrinology. Severance Hospital ranked 27th in oncology and seventh in endocrinology. Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital ranked 18th in oncology and eighth in endocrinology. All these hospitals ranked above below 50th place in its cardiology department.

Korean hospitals got their best ratings in the oncology department.

All of the big-five Hospitals – AMC, SMC, SNUH, Severance, St. Mary’s – ranked in the top 50. Fourteen other Korean hospitals had their names in the top 200, including Konkuk University Hospital, Kyung Hee University Hospital, Korea Institute of Radiological & Medical Science, and Chonnam National University Hwasun Hospital.

Chonnam National University Hwasun Hospital was the only institution outside of the Seoul metro region on the Newsweek ranking.

Korean hospitals have also proved to be strong in endocrinology. All of the b big-five institutions and Kyung Hee University Hospital ranked in the top 50, and 11 others, including Gangnam Severance Hospital, Kangbuk Samsung Hospital and Seoul National University Bundang Hospital (SNUBH), were in the top 200 in this category.

However, the cardiology department did not fare as well as the other two departments.

AMC was the only medical institution ranked in the top 50, while SMC, SNUH, SNUBH, and Korea University Anam Hospital were included in the top 200 list.

Cleveland Clinic ranked first in cardiology among foreign hospitals, MD Anderson Cancer Center ranked first in oncology, and Mayo Clinic in Rochester ranked first in endocrinology.
