This presentation was given by Barry Bredenkamp during a Webinar of Load Research Chapter 28 July 2021.

Buildings account for approximately 30% of energy consumption globally. Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs) are a common tool used in many countries to assess and identify opportunities for energy efficiency improvements in facilities. South Africa has adopted this concept, joining the global community striving for greater energy efficiency.

This talk introduces the audience to the concept and requirement of EPCs in South Africa.

At the end of last year, government gazetted new Regulations that require owners of certain building categories to display a certificate of the building’s “energy performance” at the entrance of the building, on-or-before 7 December 2022. The Regulations require that owners of 4 categories of non-residential buildings must assess and visually declare the energy consumed per square metre per year for buildings above a minimum threshold size. Data used to calculate the certificates will be submitted to the South African National Energy Development Institute (SANEDI), an agency of the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy. SANEDI will track these certificates and maintain a building performance register.

Presenter: Barry Bredenkamp is the General Manager: Energy Efficiency and Data & Knowledge Management, at the South African National Energy Development Institute (SANEDI), a state-owned entity within the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy. Barry participates actively to champion energy efficiency and reduce harmful impacts of Climate Change in the world. He has written and presented numerous papers on energy efficiency locally and internationally.
